A Solution for Scaling Networks: Intentionet
By Om Malik, May 19, 2017
Today’s networks are incredibly complex. This complexity regularly leads to security breaches, outages and compliance violations. Intentionet, True’s newest addition, is aiming to solve this problem. Led by Co-founder and CEO Ratul Mahajan, Intentionet is developing a platform that allows engineers to design and evolve their networks safely and rapidly.
I was first introduced to Ratul by a common friend, a long-time infrastructure expert and internet veteran. We met to talk about the evolution of networks. Ratul was the ideal person to have this conversation with given that he spent 11 years as principal researcher at Microsoft and helped build many technologies for Microsoft Azure, an enterprise-grade cloud computing platform. He has a Ph.D. in computer science from University of Washington and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Intentionet co-founder Ari Fogel dropped out of the Ph.D. program in computer science at UCLA to start Intentionet. He has deep expertise in both networking and programming languages and is the primary developer of the Batfish configuration analysis engine. Ari has a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in computer science and engineering from SUNY at Buffalo where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Todd Millstein, the third co-founder of Intentionet, is a renowned scientist in programming languages and software analysis. He co-developed one of the earliest practical applications of formal tools (SLAM) for Windows device drivers and is a computer science professor at UCLA. He has a Ph.D. from University of Washington and an A.B. from Brown University, both in computer science.
Networks and scaling networks have been a theme in my career, first as a reporter and now as an investor — from Twin Prime, to Veniam, to now Intentionet. We’re thrilled to invest in Ratul, Ari and Todd, and look forward to seeing them bring cutting-edge software development practices to networking.
Welcome to True, team Intentionet!
