Each holiday, Phil Black and I toast to our team and celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the True community. Most of these toasts have a theme that helps us illustrate the impact of what entrepreneurship and venture capital can enable when it’s put to meaningful use.
This year, I began our toast by sharing my fandom for the documentary film “Free Solo,” which tells the tale of Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of El Capitan, a more than 3,000-foot granite monolith in Yosemite National Park. Failure was not an option for Honnold, and while he knew the great risk at hand, he realized that not trying would be an even greater failure, at least to him.
For me, this suspenseful film demonstrates the human ability to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Scaling El Capitan was Honnold’s chance to add a new chapter to human history. Many True portfolio company founders and their teams experience a similar drive to create what’s never been. These companies have set their goals high and forge on, no matter how high the wall.
As we start 2019, we look forward to another year of valiant attempts to accomplish the seemingly impossible. But first, here’s some of what we’re proud of as we look back at a big 2018.
