True Ventures Welcomes Crypto Industry Veteran and Public Policy Expert Gus Coldebella to the Team
By Jon Callaghan and Phil Black, October 13, 2021
Today, we welcome our newest partner, Gus Coldebella, to the True Team. Gus is focused on global public policy and regulation, with a special emphasis on digital assets and other emerging technologies. His extensive experience as a lawyer, litigator, and senior government official will serve True Founders as they explore the edges of new and undefined markets.
Prior to joining our team, Gus was general counsel at two crypto-focused firms. His belief in the promise of this technology inspired him to help create the Crypto Council for Innovation, a global group of cryptocurrency leaders dedicated to advancing the industry through education, advocacy, and policy.
True has a long history of investing in digital assets. WordPress.com, a subsidiary of True Portfolio company Automattic, was one of the first major publishers to accept Bitcoin in November 2012. We made our first investment in a digital asset project in 2014 – and since then, our crypto community has grown to include more than 55 founders working on decentralized applications and projects.
Gus’s depth of experience in crypto law, public policy, and regulation is truly second to none. With his contributions to our team of seasoned crypto investors, we’ll be even more equipped to supercharge our efforts in this space to the benefit of the True Founder community.
Operationally, Gus is as experienced as they get. He served as acting general counsel and deputy general counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he led a team of 1,700 lawyers and focused on all major security issues confronting the nation including cybersecurity, counterterrorism, disaster preparedness, and immigration.
Also, Gus has believed in what we’ve built here at True since our journey began. He was an investor in our first fund, True Ventures I, and has been a trusted adviser to the firm for years. We’re honored to welcome him to the team and feel outright lucky he accepted our invitation to join True.
