Yesterday afternoon, True portfolio company Syncplicity announced that they have been acquired by EMC, a leader in the information technology market. We invested in Syncplicity back in the summer of 2008, believing strongly in the talent of co-founders Leonard Chung and Ondrej Hrebicek and the relatively nascent market for online storage, collaboration and synchronization.

Syncplicity was founded with a simple vision: computers should empower users, not slow them down. The company provided secure, cloud-based file management solutions, giving users seamless access to their files on every computer, mobile device, file server and business application they worked in, while liberating them from the complexity of their computing environment and allowing them to organize their files the way they wanted.

Syncplicity was a hit early on, touted by tech bloggers as a top product in online data management and named to PC World’s “Top 25 Best Business Software Tools & Web Services” list in 2008. In 2011, Karen White officially joined as CEO after being involved with the company for over a year as a senior advisor. Karen brought tremendous value to Syncplicity with her extensive technology background as an executive and building strong teams. Syncplicity launched numerous new applications and services that year, and was named to even more “best of” lists.

Over the past four years of our relationship with Syncplicity, we at True have enjoyed Leonard’s and Ondrej’s deep commitment to their company, and their progress each year. Working directly with Karen has been a joy, and we are very sad to see such a fine company leave our portfolio, but it is no surprise that they have been acquired by such a fine corporate entity. Joining EMC is a wonderful next step. Congratulations Karen, Leonard, Ondrej and all the fantastic employees at Syncplicity!
