At True Ventures, we believe in products that capture the world’s imagination. Drones, once a concept we rarely encountered outside of a military context, are suddenly everywhere. They are being used to film movies, providing a cheaper and safer option to manned helicopters; to monitor fields, enabling farmers to spot fungal outbreaks and treat them rather than spraying an entire crop with pesticides; and yes, by geek hacker hobbyists, eager to build and experiment with the personal robotic aircraft revolution. Not only do drones capture our imagination, but the notion that they are quickly becoming accessible to all of us absolutely blows our mind.

We have been following the “rise of the drones” for a while, and it’s been a long time since we’ve been this excited about an emerging technological industry. That’s why we were beyond excited to send out our second Quarterly.co package (#TRU02): a mini-quadcopter, which, while not containing the autopilot mechanism currently being developed for drones, gives one the sense of the magic of flying one, as well as a beautiful aerial photo taken with a drone.

In November 2012, we invested in 3D Robotics, a leading drone company started by former Wired Editor-in-Chief Chris Anderson, the visionary Founder of DIY drones, an open source community absolutely obsessed with building new and better unmanned aerial vehicles. Chris is leading the drone revolution, and we were thrilled to invite him to share the 3D Robotics story as part of our package. Not only is it a story of an incredibly exciting field, but it’s also a story of an incredibly dedicated Founder, who followed his passion and built one of today’s most promising companies.

Our Quarterly.co packages contain things we’re excited about, things to inspire Founders and aspiring Founders, and things that are just plain cool. To sign up for our package, head on over to our page.
